Edmonds clinic offers free infant eye exams

Eye care isn't necessarily at the top of the list when it comes to infant doctor visits.

The American Optometric Association's InfantSEE program, however, is seeking to change that.

Eye-care assessments for infants age 6 to 12 months can help with early detection of eye conditions.

To make such exams a more common practice for parents, participating InfantSEE eye doctors have offered no-cost exams for infants since 2005.

One in 10 children are at risk for undiagnosed eye and vision problems that could lead to developmental delays, permanent vision impairment and other health risks if left undetected.

Many children, however, don't see an eye-care professional until a teacher or school nurse has identified problems possibly linked to vision.

This month, Dr. Kathleen Solum of Edmonds Vision Center is promoting her participation in the year-round program to educate parents about the importance of infant eye care.

She will take appointments at 402 Main St., in downtown Edmonds. Call 425-771-7772 or go to www.edmondsvisioncenter.com. Mention the InfantSEE program when scheduling.
